Tips to get in the door Sales Engineering

I am currently in product management looking to jump into sales engineering. I like working with people and building demos. Looking at companies such as Salesforce, Sap, or Microsoft

Oh stop, I'm an SE now and used to be an automotive engineer. This job is no more or less engineering than sitting at a desk yelling at suppliers to build the part better.

So...not engineering at all? lol what

I think it depends on your YoE. If you're < 3 yoe you can still enter associate level or graduate level positions. If you're 5+ yoe level I think the best path is to lateral your current company if possible. If you can't move internally I've seen a ton of postings at non F500 companies that require 5-7 yoe but only 2-3 of those years have to be customer facing, and that's where a PM or CSM would fit perfectly for a lateral move. If you have experience with specific industries or types of SaaS products I would look at competitor companies' SE postings. Often industry experience or experience with similar products helps people break into the SE role at SAP. The trick here is each company calls it's SEs something different so you have lots to look out for: sales engineer, solutions engineer, pre-sales consultant, solutions consultant, solution specialist. The hardest possible path would be to switch to implementation consulting first, then after 2 years you can get any SE posting you want for that product space.

Sure thing but can't promise I'll be much help! So much of finding these things is luck and persistence.
