Tired of no-life culture

I'm so tired of everyone in my life having no life at all. It's just so pathetic, it's like everyone has given up. They work now, and that's it. They're "Career Professionals", whatever the fuck that means. Everyone is dead inside. There should be so much more to life then work. And the work itself is soul-draining, I find it hard to believe anyone could find it to be a decent life. I'm the only one who does anything outside of work. The others might watch some Netflix and take care of errands on weekends, if not just sleep and try a new restaurant or some bullshit. I'm new to my career, I thought life could be decent. I thought I could work, and have a life. But I'm the only one in the office trying to live life (it seems), I can't compete with people who live their life at work, and a 10 minute walk from the office for when they go home to eat and sleep. I just find it sad and pathetic. I don't find it 'prestigious' to throw away your life like this.

Yo man same here. It’s also probably your company/team.. gotta move somewhere people are more active. Looking at your Colorado , or you central coast California (Santa Barbra).. for whatever reason LA and SF is full of people who died a long time ago

I'd love to try Colorado or (some parts of) California. Both beautiful states, in my opinion. It'd be great to get a better lifestyle there.

Ahhhhhh. So this is what life is like? Let me work 50 weeks per year so that I can live 2 weeks per year.

Sounds like you work for amzn?

Salesforce curious03 Dec 9, 2019

Isn't Facebook worse ?

Facebook public2 Dec 9, 2019

Never worked for amzn so cannot comment directly but fb wlb is amazing (I'm aware this is an unpopular opinion on blind but not everyone is a new grad working too much trying to make vp in 5 years :)) amzn on the other hand doesnt even have a wlb concept and promotes the "circle".

They've given up. They noticed that the people who sacrificed more got ahead, they didn't want to fall behind, and so they sacrificed everything else to keep drudging along. If you don't find a way to accept less, the exact same thing will happen to you.

Capital One youaintme Dec 11, 2019

I think that’s key if you don’t want your life to revolve around work you have to accept that maybe you won’t be promoted as fast or work at companies where they want you on call or whatever. It’s about finding that balance and determining what’s most important for you.

Workday Iuf4F2 Dec 11, 2019

I agree. I'll add that it ironically takes conscious effort to accept less. Your whole career people will be encouraging you for going above and beyond and then criticizing or shaming you if up don't. They will celebrate others in public who do. Those people will talk about their awards, promotions, higher pay, and what it allows them to do. Only the most disciplined, unattached minds can accept less.

I'm speaking for myself but for the most part I enjoy what I do and I put in effort. But yeah I don't have much of a life and I'm boring to an outsider but I enjoy the grind. That being said if you wanna enjoy other aspects of life leaving Amazon is your best bet. But I did want to tell you that there are aggressive people who care about their career (yes it looks foolish to outside people but it brings them happiness to work insanely hard )

Amazon TExf71 OP Dec 11, 2019

Sorry man, not trying to shame you or anything. Everyone is looking for what they want most, so I'm not blaming you for liking the grind. It just feels like most of the people that I've interacted with at Amazon are lying to themselves, that's all. It seems like they're saying, 'This is what life is about, I'm living the life' and I can just see deadness inside. Very dull. Again, if you are liking working hard, not trying to bash it.

I’ve always been able to find people to hang out with throughout my career. How well do you do your immediate team and acquaintances within the company as a whole? Strike up a conversation and you might realize the “career professional” thing is just a facade for getting ahead or at best they just don’t share their hobbies with coworkers involuntarily.

Also depends on your team. I have friends who work at Amazon who definitely has a life outside of work. One regularly volunteers in disasters, which is how I met them.
