This post is ONLY about Engineering Director role. I am posting this to make industry aware of this, so Netflix Directors just can't go any other FAANGs at the same level since the scope and responsibilities are widely different here.
Engineering Director level has become a joke here, we have many directors with 4-8 people total in their Org. Engineering manager role has become Director role here. No one cares about the scope of work or the impact they are making. Let me post some Org numbers to show the issue
VP has ~430 per org with 11 other VPs, 65 Directors and 30 managers. So essentially, there are 100+ leadership people doing nothing for every 3 ICs.
I know 10+ engineering directors with 7-8 people total in their Org.
While Netflix doesn't do anything to grow ICs (zero growth opportunities for ICs here), they are handing out Director level with insane pay to these front line managers. Just so you know, Eng Directors make $1m-$1.6m here.
