Amazon l7 interview - need feedback

Jul 4, 2020 115 Comments

hi All,

i had a great Amazon L7 PM interview last week. however the recruiter took time to speak with me and told me that i did not perform well in Product Strategy which is important in L7 role. however, i was an outstanding performer in other aspects. she told i should wait for 2 years, which i feel is odd. i told her that may be i did not articulate myself better.

i think the interviewer was looking for specific keywords in the product strategy. But i dont know where the gap is?

what do you guys recommend i do?

You didn't drown the interviewers with LPs. That's why. Your next step is to frame everything you do in LPs. Take your breakfast for example:
    - Skip breakfast: Frugality
    - Eat dinner leftovers: Invent and Simplify
    - Expired milk and cereals: Disagree and Commit
    - Eat bananas in car: Bias for Action, Earn Trust
    - Full course: Insist on the Highest Standards
    And so on...

    • What you are saying is a mixture of "Dive deep" and "Learn and Be Curious". Seeking diverse perspective is important.
My comments were more about "They have strong judgment and good instincts.". That is not a course of action.

    • Guys, I have always rocked the leadership principles for amazon interviews. I had declined offer for last time as they gave me l6 when I was applying for L7. Even this time LP was not an issue, but I get a sense that amazon looks for certain type of answers for product strategy, which may be different in world outside of Amazon

Well, it depends on what he did at TCS. As an example, If op was a VP or SVp at TCS incharge of all US clients with > 100M client revenue and specific to AWS migrations, L7 will be a step down.

Please don't generalize a persons worth to their company's brand!

  • In any case hiring from TCS is discouraged as it is a services company and very different from a product company.
As a hiring manager myself, I would be very skeptical hiring someone at principal level from a services company.

OP should first get into a product company that is a startup and move to Amazon L7 later. That way there is no downleveling involved.

@drummm it isn't condescension. HMs are scared of people from that background coming in and destroying orgs/projects with chopshop culture. Amazon already rides the line of chop shop, any more churn and a lot of stuff just grinds to a halt.

If they said wait 2 years it means they did not even recycle you. So no your interview performance was not good otherwise they would have said 6 months. Sorry to burst your bubble.

It is customary for recruiter to close it over the phone for various reasons. That’s what they get paid for. Like rest said, sorry to break your bubble. You didn’t clear the loop even at L6, there must have been lots of red flags. There are tons of L6 PM/PMT roles available and even if you raised the bar at L6, they would have given you an L6 offer. 2 years is their way of saying the gap is way too much. Keep your chin up, prep hard on getting. All round PM skills and interview again. Good luck ! (I am a BR myself). It is not just the BR didn’t like you. BR is trained to be objective and not biased.
