Go woke, go broke: Google fires 28 employees involved in pro-Hamas protest
If you scan my previous posts you would see I just took an offer from a small - midsize company cloud solutions provider to be a DevOps Engineer and rejected an L5 AWS systems engineer offer. By all accounts the cloud company has better pay, benefits, no on-call, better WLB, etc and that's all important considering Akamai treated me well and I have a family and stuff. I told AWS on Friday I wouldn't be taking the job. I'm starting to feel a bit of remorse and am wondering if I possibly squandered a really good opportunity. Feeling like I've made a decision that could hinder my ultimate goal of becoming a SDE.
of course you did, you made that decision because there were things you didnt want to sacrifice
Right....it makes sense. But I've been asking/telling myself, "people at Amazon have families, right? How bad would it be for an L5 Systems Engineer?" Not afraid to work hard but afraid to work hard and mess up my family life.
You effed up. Sorry.
Sarcasm or....? Why do u think that (if you're serious)? Curious to know...
AWS is a resume builder. 2-3 years there would set you up for the next few years of your career. Devops in a small-midsize company means your next gig will almost certainly be devops. With AWS, there was a good chance you could have transitioned to SDE in a couple years.
How much more money are we talking?
It came down to about 20K more per year with all that TC added up. With the AWS clearance bonus kicking in eventually it would have only been 5K more. Benefits were vastly cheaper and better though
Yeah, if you don’t already have a FAANG + M on your resume, this may have been a blunder. The fact that you’re thinking about it makes me feel like you know this as well. It’s likely no too late to change. Talk to your family about it.
Lol this is why I said initially on your first post as a pro for AWS that the brand recognition would open so many other doors down the road for you, especially Amazon in general being one of the most stable companies to weather this covid stuff and/or recession
Makes sense....you offered good advice. That is the side of it that is making me do a bit of a double take
You could always try to get the recruiter to rescind your denial, and explain that you thought about it a lot more in detail and hope they'll be open to you accepting and giving you the role. No garauntees though
Man I read that post, and distinctly remember that. Can you still go back and ask for the AWS offer back?
Probably but I think I'll give the other company a chance first. If it's a disaster I think I'm in a position to re-engage with AWS. They are always in need of engineers with security clearances and the recruiter basically said as much
Blind can be extremely helpful if you name the company. (Ideally in your earlier post). Now nobody knows how to evaluate.
I would have chosen AWS given only 5K TC difference. 5K TC difference is insignificant in long run. If difference was like 50K that would be different story
I did it for the better benefits, no on call, better WLB overall and the idea I could go to AWS later as a sys dev engineer after I gain some more coding skills in this DevOps role
Of course your point is why I almost took the offer at Amazon and why I'm still having a hard time with it now
Alternatively, take the new job, put the extra TC and WLB towards a part-time master’s, and get a dev job in two years
Amazon chews through people at a high rate. If you were good enough now you will be good enough later and can always work there later if you want to. Go work somewhere else where you will have an impact and be appreciated and apply at Amazon in a few years if you still want to do that.
AWS is future, talk to them generally they will extend you offer
Too late, eh?
