I have weekly 1-1s with my manager, but I am not quite sure what exaclty we should be talking about. Most of the times we end up talking about ongoing projects, which I am sure is not right. What exactly should I talk about to make sure I leave right impact on him
Professional development. Asking and receiving performance feedback. Asking for expectations and how you’re meeting them.
I am sure you do it during your 1-1s
Yeap talking about breakups and stuff lol
You snake! Why did you took credit for the last project I delivered?
Thats why i asked my manager not to have 1:1 weekly, instead we should have it as required. He is cool with it.
Weekly 1:1 are not productive. They lose their prominence in a couple of weeks unless you are a fresh grad and you want to use these sessions for mentorship/guidance and feedback until you catch up with your team’s pace
Agreed. I had bi-weekly 1-1s for the first 2-3 months when I transitioned to my role from a different company then I maybe do monthly now and I’m at like 3YOE total. Your first year out of college is one of the only times weekly 1-1s are productive
I don’t agree. I think it depends on the role. I really enjoy my 1v1s and sharing my projects and ideas.
Obstacles / problems Achievements / progress / milestones Potential opportunities for the team / your role Career growth / development / training New requests or projects If you don’t have anything to talk about weekly, suggest a biweekly meeting Someone said weekly is not productive. Totally depends on your role and style. I meet weekly for a half hour and always fill the time with completely new discussion or updates. (Sometimes we cancel if schedules don’t allow.) I also have a heavy workload and wide scope of work. I have had managers/monotonous workload where we met monthly for half an hour. It depends on you and your manager and y’all’s needs.
Promotions promotions promotions. Start filling your promo doc ASAP . And identify areas that you're lacking and bring it up to your manager and ask for projects that let you jump the gaps . Repeat this until all the gaps are filled after which start pushing for a promo
Ask your manager what topics they discussed in their 1-on-1s with their manager.
Your ambitions and how your manager can help you with that.

Mine are almost always awkward. I ask my manager what his plans are for my next level in almost every 1:1. And what his plans are to grow. We talk about how bored I am with the current work and any new areas of work my manager is getting for the team. And also discuss any ideas that he has/I have that I can go implement.
You are responsible from your career , you should not wait your manager to tell you what is next. You should tell him/her what you want and you will plan it together.
