I’m new to the industry. Please tell me what the topics to discuss with my manager would be.

Start with your managers household income. It’ll cut the tension right through.

I'd pay to see someone do the "TC or GTFO" in interviews.

    1. Long term vision of your career and how to get there, make a plan with your manager for this
    2. Short term goals, whether there are any blockers stopping you to achieve them
    3. Things you found challenging in past days and how did you solve them
    4. Feedback, get immediate feedback from your manager around events in past days and also give it to them
    5. I also like to talk about stuff outside work with my reports, F1, travel, etc

What not to do during 1-1:

Reporting status on your work, its not a standup meeting or a status check meeting

Wait, 1:1 is _not_ about the status of your work? That's what I always talked about with my former manager, who demanded _daily_ 1:1 meetings with me.. lt was so stressful. As someone with no talent or promotion potential, I don't want to talk with my manager _at all_; I just want to do the work assigned to me and be left alone.

    • My previous job I treated my 1:1s like stats reports and my manager told me I didn’t need to do that.

Switched to a new job and every 1:1 is basically a status update and I miss the old job a lot more now (besides the TC). Feel pressured to have something to report :(

Asked this a while ago and got some great feedback
    - keep a running doc of notes to discuss with your manager and prepare something new at least 24 hours prior to your meeting
    - constantly ask for feedback
    - discuss challenges that came up since the last
    - you have to tell them what you want to talk about, they can’t read your mind
    - save time for some chit chat at the end, people like working with PEOPLE

I remember struggling with that too, I used to prep post-its with silly questions just to fill those dead air meetings.
