Tough Google offer situation

I’ve interviewed with Google NYC recently, and just being told that my packet passed HC, and now on to team matching phase before extending an offer to me. The HC result I’ve got from recruiter is “most likely L4, with small chances of L3, but level will be decided after team matching”. I’m a little confused and not sure about why leveling would be related to team matching. Also currently I have no compensation info at all, that will only be revealed to me after offer extension. I’ve told my recruiter my expected TC is 280K excluding signon bonus, and his reply is “wow, thats really high”, even though I know its definitely not out of band for L4. I don’t have other interviews or competing offer at this moment, because I’m really short of time and hope Google can help me apply for H-1B this year, since its my last chance. Also I’m told team matching in NYC is really competitive and it will take much longer than bay area. So I’m even worried if I can make the H-1B deadline. Does anyone have advice or answer for my questions? 1. Why isn’t my level decided in HC yet? 2. What can I do to speed up the process so I can make the H-1B? 3. How can I negotiate the TC without competing offer? I’m really in a tough spot now, would appreciate any advice or help. 2 YOE 220K TC

$280k is not out of band for L4 with competing offers

But I don’t have competing offer at this moment, also which companies will provide high enough competing offer for me to try later?

Competing offer must come from FAANG

Why not wait at fb for h1b and then move? Offer is valid for a year

Facebook gavsgggg OP Feb 14, 2020

Since I want both G & FB to apply for H-1B this year, since it’s my last chance.

Capital One DflL60 Feb 14, 2020

True, since it's your last year, H1b is more important. If Google can't speed up the process for you. You better stay.

280k is def out of band for L3

Facebook gavsgggg OP Feb 14, 2020

Have you read my post? I’ll most likely get L4, I won’t even accept this offer if it’s L3.

Bloomberg NO<Go> Feb 14, 2020

I think FIRE’s point is if you’re on the border of L3 and L4 you’re probably not going to get the upper end of L4 salary that normally is given with competing offers only

Would not count on them making in time for H1-B. Takes a month for lawyers to get packet ready. You should ask what new H1-B deadlines are. Likely they need you to accept by March 1 to get process started, so your hopes are on HC finishing by then.

Facebook gavsgggg OP Feb 14, 2020

But isn’t this year only requiring e-reg first? And file real document only if you get selected? I thought that takes much less time than previous years.

Cruise Automation mrain Feb 14, 2020

Not sure as this is new process. Ask the recruiting team what their immigration team decided. Looking at USCIS website, I interpret this can either be good or bad for you since e-reg needs to be submitted from Mar 1-20 and only selected profiles can submit actual petition. This moves the deadline up from Apr 1 to Mar 20 for a submission of information.

Without competing offers it ll be very hard to get past 250k

Facebook gavsgggg OP Feb 14, 2020

OK, if that’s the case, I think I won’t be able to accept this offer....at least at this moment... Can’t trade my pride for lowball shit.

OP, you are rude as fuck

Google JRkb46 Feb 14, 2020

280k is on the high end of l4 (if you divide everything except the base by 4). HC should've decided the level already, unless you are borderline l4 (given 2 YOE, very possible). I guess the recruiter is trying to see if the hiring manager can put in some good words for HC after team matching (pure speculation, I've heard about it, but was told that never worked)

Thx good advice! Do you know can I keep US initial RSU if I go oversea? Or will those RSU be reset to local market standard?

Google vvffii Feb 14, 2020

I think it's just common recruiter strategy to say anything as high/out of band. They said same to me for L4 and were low balling me at 220K. They upped to 290K within few hours once I presented 2 competing offers.

Facebook gavsgggg OP Feb 14, 2020

What exact competing offers do you have? I might try later.

Microsoft yegeme Feb 14, 2020

What is your offer breakdown @vvffii

Microsoft yegeme Feb 14, 2020

What happens if you get both approved? You get to choose one?

Facebook gavsgggg OP Feb 14, 2020

Yeah, H-1B won’t get activated until you join that employer. btw, it has to be consular processing in the case. If it’s COS and you don’t join the employer by 10/01, you’ll be out of status.

What’s cos

OP - you need to review the situation and re-prioritize things. Your need to focus on your HB1 problem. Everything else comes second. If you can't figure that out asap - you need to work with your current company have them transfer you abroad (probably back to your home country). Here are some key points to consider - your pay will get re-leveled back to your home country - you need to take what you can get...your current company or whomever can get you an H1B1 visa is in the drivers seat - you said that you won't take a low salary because of pride...for every success story about pride...there are 100 people working at shit company who failed. Screw your pride - You are not going to get near the top of the L4 band...if you are borderline between L3 and L4 you will maybe get the entry level area of the L4 band Best of luck

Thx for every word you type here, I’ll rethink about my decision and try to overcome my pride here.
