I’ll be a new grad soon. Is it a good move to get one of these cars?

I can get around $10k tax credit if I buy a new EV/plug-in hybrid.

When I moved to Seattle I sold my car. I lived there for 3 years and never needed to own a vehicle. In addition to car payments, you will pay thousands of dollars of insurance, upkeep, parking space rent (whaaat!), registration, and whatever else. The biggest expense for me is my time and energy:

It takes just as long to Uber somewhere as it does to drive, but you don't have to worry about driving stress, road ragers, you don't have to find a parking spot, you don't have to pay for parking or run back to re-up the meter, you don't even have to remember where you parked, you don't have to worry about getting into an accident while pulling out of the road because folks aren't looking both ways, and you'll never worry about coming back to your car to find the windows smashed. Owning a car in a city sucks.

In most of the country you need to own a car. In the cities you really don't.

Yeah I sold my car as soon as I moved to Seattle. The parking at my apartment was going to be more than the car payment. Not to mention the parking I'd pay every time I drove somewhere.
That said as soon as I moved back to Atlanta I bought a car again. So it depends a lot on which city IMO.

@Amazon This is very poor advice for a new grad today. 3 years ago, Ubers were very inexpensive.

Nowadays it’s $30-$50 a trip to get between different parts of Seattle (e.g. cap hill to Ballard). This is on top of the fact that you’re completely locked out of hiking (best part of Washington) without a car.

Seattle is not like NYC or SF with state run transportation (that you pay way too much for), and Seattle is very big / spread out.

OP, look into used Toyota Corollas or cheaper hybrids that you can get the EV credit on. You must have a car here (or lots of friends who do) to have a good experience.

Corollas/Camrys/Civics are awesome. That said, $10k credit is huge, get an EV.

  • Nothing against Toyota cars. But test drive a Camry and then test drive Civic or Accord.

    You will feel the difference.

Can you elaborate? What are the differences? Having the same dilemma but I’m pretty new to driving so hoping to learn from your point of view
