Google CFO confirms 'large-scale' layoffs (Apr 17)
What will they really do ?
Cry about it at UN.
They will detain couple of hundred Canadian citizens for spying in China. I also suspect that has already happened. Canadians do not learn.

China can arrest Google execs for violating privacy law?
I'm surprised the Western public is not more mindblown by this news. Did you just arrest the CFO and daughter of a global telecom equipment giant?
Tell me which American billionaires are jailed abroad? Xi gonna make Canada pay
Western public will not do shit. The most they will do is act outraged in social media but that's it.
China is realizing that they are not as strong as they think. :)
They just sent 'let her go, morons' demand. That is pure power move.
Ha ha. No one cares about ‘consequences’. Chinese people themselves don’t care about the rules set by their country. What would they do ? Make people not buy American products ? Make people not invest in US/Canada ? Well, guess what they have rules to stop people from moving money out of China (since past 3 years) and look how that worked out. :)
So far the response of China is very meek. Looks like the MAGA administration caught them blind sighted. This episode has shown that China is a weak country in front of US. However Beijing is full of American expatriates if China wanted they can arrest a boat load of American executives. Funny thing is that Canada was humiliated recently about that whole NAFTA deal and here they are ... being good and loyal dogs to the MAGA administration.
While China is second super power, its power is meager to US. China got out of poverty not long ago and it has years to catch up to have the same standard as any European counties or US. While I understand China does lots of bad things, it is usually worse in countries with poorer economy. It is just the way it works in the current world. Even though Chinese government works hard to develop the country, it may take two generations to catch up the standard like US does. If you apply the similar rules to other countries, They would have been accused of violating more. Not trying to defend this case for China. Indian for example has 4x smaller economy. What that means is there would be more of human rights violations and what not in India. China as a country is huge but individuals don’t afford as much as other European or some Asian countries. This shows in a lot of forms and you can see average people are not as polite or educated etc which are the byproducts of years of economic wealth. As a result, China as a country may do a lot more horrible things than most of other more developed countries. I think China acted stupidly for trade war by trying to look like they can go toe to toe against US. Japan in 1980s was much more powerful yet US was able to subdue its economy to the point it enters into the recession lasting for 25 years. If China doesn’t surrender now, the consequences may be dire. China doesn’t even have as many companies that can sell the products globally as South Korea whose population is less than 4%. It simply doesn’t have the structure to go against this pressure. There are some high tech which China is leading such as AI but difference is meaningless and number of things they can do better than anybody is very small. The world can live without China. All products will cost a bit more but what China does is not a unique or difficult things to do. They can be moved to other developing economies such as Vietnam and it has been happening. Xi’s signing to become a ruler indefinitely was a poor showing which triggered the concern for US. China should have acted like they were going to follow the rules set by US and silently improve its power at every aspect. It will also need democracy eventually when people are more mature. With current political system, it will face the limit soon in many areas and won’t be able to do more than what developing countries do until then.
True. Well said. I’m having hard time to believe Chinese government hasn’t realized this. Maybe they have, time will tell. It will show in the next 90 days.
A lot of speculations and the information used to support those arguments are rather farfetched. The current global stage is far more complex and ever-changing than what most people can realize. Almost all information we consume is pre-selected and filtered in one form or another. It's best to be an observer when we are seeing things through a tunnel.
US execs now will forever be scared of being arrested in China for doing business in Taiwan.
She violated rule of law. China must respect international rule of law surrounding trade and security.
International rule of law that is made by a terrorist organization. US is forcing sanctions on Iran for it’s own benefit, bombing countries left and right. Wreaking havoc in the world, supporting Saudi Arabia and Israel. And you think China should respect these ridiculous “laws”? 😂😂🎅
@Santa: you’re a hypocrite. are you living in the US? if so, why do you live in such terrorist nation?
