hey blind community,

Im a traditional architect/interior designer (YoE: 6) trying to break into the UX/product design world. Theres much more growth and opportunity in tech.

Any tips on how to do this without having to start from 0 or take a general assembly course? I have all the design thinking/graphic design training from Grad and undergrad. All in my portfolio. Just no UX process portfolio. #uxdesigner #productdesign

One key thing about making the switch, is to portray yourself as a story-teller who has a strong design-process . I also made the jump (from landscape architecture) and I used some school projects to showcase how I use design process. But you also need to have some tech projects in your portfolio. For this, I spent some of my free time helping a former classmate with her startup company and got involved in tech that way. I also didn’t take a full bootcamp because I didn’t need foundational skills in design, but I took a shorter and cheaper 6-week course from GA. This helped to at least show me what design process looks like for UX/Product, and helped me produce a portfolio piece. Hope this helps, it might seem tough, but its doable to leave the architecture profession! I have been so much happier and have made more money since I left 2 years ago.
