I want to transition to India around this year end . Looking for around 25L-30L TC in India. Do you think it makes sense to give interviews at FAANG or teir 1 companies in US now and then ask for an internal transfer. Is it possible to get an internal transfer so quickly ? Or does it make more sense to apply for jobs in India directly. TC : 112k YOE in US : 1 year. YOE in India : 2 years
Salary would depend on location and your skill demand/supply situation. With less than 4 years and the ask you have, check B'lore or startups around.
Referring one of the old post
I want to do the same thing. I think internal transfer makes more sense.
Please please please come back only via internal transfer.. your transition will be easier and you will also get the best pay packages. In India, your package for next job depends on what you last made, so the first salary you make when you come back is very important. It is easier to negotiate when you already have a job, otherwise folks will undercut you.
Internal transfer. If you go to India with say 40-50L the next job hop will fetch you 60-70.The same holds true for any country actually. Always change only one parameter at a time(geography or company ; not both)
How are companies in India able to offer such TCs? What happens once u reach something like 15YOE? Would you be able to get > 2 Cr?
If you see posts here a LOT of people are getting offers in excess of 40L. There is one major thing happening in India right now : American companies are ramping up hiring for core positions in India. As a result similar to what is happening in Canada salaries are increasing due to more competition. An additional parameter in India is that startups are very well funded and competitive. OP will not get this salary if he works for say Infosys or Wipro or CTS most likely
2 cr salaries are not unheard of based on the level say VP, India head etc but please be aware that just because someone is coming back to US, they don’t automatically get leadership positions or high TCs. There have been enough high profile exits from likes of Flipkart/ Ola/ Swiggy that Indian companies are a bit vary of whether US returnees will be able to work in India. Please be aware that working even in the same company in India is much much tougher. I have seen people who moved from Amazon US to Amazon India either quit or move back to US within a year. Similarly I have heard quality of work in Google India to be much lower quality than US. Not sure of the likes of Microsoft, so don’t want to generalize. But don’t be expected to be given white glove treatment.
What is about the work that makes it tough in India? Just curious
Too many assholes. Worklife is toxic in India.
I think clearing FAANG interviews and coming back makes more sense , might take a year longer but for the next 3 years you LL be able to keep 3x shares of what you'll get in India . Btw if I may ask what prompting you to return early in your career.
Also those salaries are standard FAANG sse 1 salaries, you'll be able to command > 40lpa if you come as an sde 2 ( not taking into account your higher us stocks )
Thanks ptfan. How soon can I ask for an internal transfer ?
