Has anyone here made a move from industry to doing research at universities? What was the transition like? Any advice for people exploring the transition?
Why would you do that? Unless you are getting to start your own lab in a top 5 university or genuinely enjoy teaching, Genentech is any day better. 90% of academic researchers work on useless stuff and are always stretched for funding. Then you will have to deal with politics of academia while getting paid half of what your peers in industry will making. Perhaps you are fresh PhD and are having difficulty settling into the industry. But that can get better over time. Talk to your manager and their manager and explain your frustrations. Ask them to find you mentors within the organization.
