Shopify employees : Are you good?? They're pitting you against each other? wtf
Have been in tech for 4 years (I am older though, was in finance before), planning to become an EM. How is the AM program at Uber? Is it worth staying just for the program? I am asking because I also have an offer from FB with a 40% pay increase. Should I join FB and then try becoming an EM there? How hard is to transition at FB? Is it possible to transition to EM with a L4 offer? Thanks in advance!
The AM program is decent IMO. But given the 40% pay increase (which is massive), I think you should talk to your FB recruiter and ask what their management training and process is like. I’m assuming you’d rather get a 40% pay increase now and be willing to wait 1-2 more years before becoming a manager at FB. Btw what’s your TC at U?
Facebook doesn't do L4 EMs, and only some orgs do L5 EMs. If you're good moving up is easy though
4 YOE seems short to become an EM
Get 7-10 years of SWE experience first.
If your main aim is to become a formal EM, you can perhaps make it in Uber in a year , if you can get quickly into the AM program. Not sure if timelines are realistic, or if you can easily get into the AM In FB, from E4, it will take you 3-4 years to reach E6.
Sort of tangential, but are there many EM’s at Uber who progressed past AM/EM1? Most More senior managers I’ve seen were outside hires.
Oh very good point! I would be interested to know as well!
AM program is relatively recent so I don’t think there would be a lot. Also, AM is equivalent to 5A whereas EM II is equivalent to 5B. (Although you could join the aTLM program as a 5B engineer to become a TLM.) And then Senior Manager is 6.
