Beware of Wonsulting

So - I've been trolling LinkedIn and Reddit and giving myself a reputation by harassing LinkedIn influencers who post garbage hiring advice that's designed to be emotionally manipulative while they shamelessly exploit the "job-search 2020" hashtags to try and increase their own audience.

As someone who has worked in HR in Tech for a long ass time - I can safely call myself a topic expert on how most corps hire from end to end.

As an HR person I also know the value of a job in GOOD times, never-mind how valuable it is in a bad market -so I tend to get heated when people deliberately give bad advice, and even more so when they charge for it. Perfect example - posting something deliberately inflammatory on LinkedIn like one of those "Dear Manager" emails - encouraging people to comment. But if. you comment, that shows on "Recent Activity" and so if a potential HM or TA sees that and your last post was "Yeah, Hiring Managers are so effing stupid right now and TA is completely worthless!" than you just shot yourself in the foot to help someone else build their engagement.

A few people were brought to my attention where people were asking for verification on their services to see if they were legit. If you haven't heard of Wonsulting they arre 2 guys who spent a few years in Google (In Product and Ops) and now built this company designed to turn "underdogs into heros" by helping them get into the job of their dreams. They offer premium resume, coaching and salary negotiation services and have about 30k followers - primarily students or recent grads.

I spent a week in their discord and looked over their products, and I't say its a 3/10 worth the value. Some of the content is really positive - based on believing yourself, coming at positions from a place of value and understanding, and keeping track of network. Some of their advice is god-awful, including telling people to use "I got a new job offer" posts to your advanrage by asking for a hookup, or tracking who they tagged to ask for interviews. Their resume service was $300 (as a frame of reference, Im pretty much an expert at resumes and mine is $99) and was basically generic google advice. The tactics they give for salary negotiations are very outdated and basic and several of the people I spoke to in the discord said they felt they got robbed.

I find it really reprehenible that they are targeting students, but such is capitalism. I dont think professionals of more than 5 years would fall for their tactics, but still - you never know. If you happen to come across them or are considering their services, just be careful. They are very good at selling hope, not value.

Also just for a fun ending - I spent 3 hours in their discord server, politely correcting their bad advice, providing links to people of very senior people in FAANG that I know are open to cold emails or as reference points to build career job profiles. Taught them a better way to think about Cover Letters, went over some of the typical interview styles, and was in the midst of helping a girl from India with her resume when they blocked me on everything- and made an announcement saying "I had violated the discord server by promoting my services" I take that as an W.

FYI the CEO didn’t quit or “get laid off due to covid” as he claims he was from Cisco. He was let go before covid. Keeping a job is what he should learn to do.

Their posts are typical cheesy LinkedIn posts. I feel bad for the people who actually listen to their advice.

Oh the cliches on LinkedIn. All those stories by influencers sound exactly like a commercial Indian movie.

  • Their posts are so cringe and they’re recycled over and over again. No idea how people can mindlessly like and comment on their lackluster posts... uhhhh
