Have job offers from both companies; wondering what the community feels on each companies' growth potential. They seem to be pretty similar business model-wise but have Softbank investing heavily in Getaround and Daimler in Turo. Turo is in a lot more markets but Getaround is ahead tech wise. Turo has a bigger app download stats and Getaround only recently launched their Android app?
I host a car on both platforms. Turo has the lead and already a sizeable business. But their tech is pretty crappy and so many things that should be automated require contacting support. They are now trying to make support cheaper, pushing hosts to chat and email from phone. Getaround has much better tech and they are small enough that support is good. I think the market is big enough for several players, I think they can both grow significantly. Of course, when self driving comes, it could impact both's business.
Do you make decent money by hosting vehicles on turo and getaround? Can you share any details?
As a user of both, I find Getaround much better!
Can offer a biased opinion if you want. To your outlined points, there’s a few distinctions to think about: 1) the business models are actually fairly different. Getaround focuses in on short term rentals (hourly mostly) and Turo focuses on longer term rentals (days, months, etc). As a result, Getaround has higher transaction counts than Turo, but I would find it hard to believe that their average transaction value is even close. Turo actually started off with Getaround’s model years ago, but scrapped it (look up the history of RelayRides 2) Getaround has that SoftBank money which is great for hiring and resources (new offices, new perks, etc). Turo had a great Series D. Depends on how important you think SoftBank is in picking winners and losers as well as your confidence in the CEO. I’d look up blog posts and interviews with both Sam and Andre.
Hey, is it ok if I message you to find out some details about the company? I'm expecting an offer tomorrow. I'd like to clarify some details about the company
And Turo just announced $250M from IAC. Presumably if they can deliver, they will become part of IAC long term. https://techcrunch.com/2019/07/17/peer-to-peer-car-sharing-marketplace-turo-raises-250m-at-over-1b-valuation-from-iac/
What was the offer ?
I was in a final round at Getaround for a pm position and have been a Getaround owner since 2014 (had a 2008 prius on there and made 8k in 3 years and then a 2013 Lexus CT which made 5k in 2+years). The money sounds good but, I dealt with my car getting stolen twice, broken into 5 times and trashed by renters 5+ times. The final straw for me was a Getaround renter that I "distrusted" on their app due to a previous issue who rented my car again and returned it with cigarette ash all over my dashboard and front seat mats. I was planning on driving thst car to my on-site. Game over for the interview. If Getaround can build a way to make it easier for owners to rent their cars and ensure that a) they are maintained and b) kept clean and c) can assist with police activity, I think they'll do well. Also I absolutely loved the team there. Very talented and humble as said before as well as crazy passionate about the mission which was inspiring. Their design team really rocks too!
