I need to decide whether to accept a second Google internship or a Microsoft offer. I know that getting a second Google internship would better my chances at getting hired for a full time position, but having two big companies on my resume would make it stronger (?)
Who would you hire? Some one with two Google Internships or someone with two internships at two different big companies?

All my friends who interned at google their senior year never got return offers and had to re recruit all of senior year. They said google had been extremely bad about rehiring interns in the exit interviews, etc. This might not be important to you but letting you know just in case...

No having microsoft on resume dilutes your resume strength

  • definitely one of each is better for your resume. And for good reasons. You’ll know far more about what you want to do after one at each, and having both companies compete for you when you convert to full time will push up your price.

Nah msr in academic circles is still pretty much the place to go for industry labs. Google doesn’t really have an equivalent. Google research is applied (I.e., engineering focused) you can’t just have Leslie Lamport with a white board

There are theoretical groups in google headed by some high profile people. They’re not officially google research. You just don’t know about them.

Msr is now broken up into pieces. Only msr labs does non applied and that group is small. They are encouraged to make product impact (i.e. applied). Many high profile great people left. Not surprisingly, many went to google. Many were moved into product groups to do applied research.

Msr was a drain on resource and after billg left, no one was batting for msr. There were concerns that it would turn into xerox parc.

2 goog is better. Msft is bad for your cred. Go msft if you’re going to retire after

Jokes aside, if you see something, please say something. Maybe say something anonymously on here (not kidding this time), otherwise you're talking like it's common knowledge/experience that there's unethical behavior routinely going on. It isn't my experience, so do be more specific what it is you're referring to.
