UBS vs Fidelity SWE

YOE: new grad UBS(NYC) TC: 80k + 10k signon Fidelity(Boston) TC: 70k + 8k signon + 8% yearly bonus long-term GF lives in NYC as do many of my friends, however I feel like the $$ would go farther in Boston... is that worth it? Or if it's splitting hairs, then can someone comment on their experiences at either of the companies? Apologies for the low TC, tell FAANG that I promise I won't fuck up their interviews next time around :) #Finance #UBS

I wouldn't join UBS for 80k in NY

Are you saying you'd choose Fidelity then? Obviously I'd love to make more lol

I have worked fidelity in past. I liked it and learnt a lot

Join UBS. Don’t do long distance and NYC is way better than Boston. Your TC is low but fine for first year in NYC, see if you can negotiate.

How much would you ask for? And should I negotiate salary or bonus?

Uber baaron Feb 6, 2020

Negotiate salary and ask for 90k. Worst case they say can’t negotiate but say you have a pending offer. NYC isn’t that much more expensive than Boston anyways

You can live in Brooklyn or a surround Burroughs w roommates for a comparable price to Boston. GF + friends in nyc make it easily worth it. I would try and use Boston offer as leverage for counter offer but carefully.

Lol it’s actually easier to get cheaper housing in nyc if you’re willing to commute than Boston definitely take the Austin offer congrats :)

nyc, boston sucks in comparison for barely any difference in take-home pay or COL

Congrats on your offers! The NYC offer is great but I wanted to tell you whatever I can. Ex- Fidelity here, non-SWE. Fidelity is a great company, fairly chilled lifestyle, very independent business lines and work, lots to learn in a challenging landscape. Lots of scope to move in the company. Apart from your comp, they'll also do an additional profit sharing to your 401k, they did at my level, G6 (I got an extra 10% over their 7% match). The base can be higher and bonus too (mine was 22%). Ask for a sign on as well. Their relocation is decent as well. In terms of cost, Boston may be cheaper but only slightly but all that back and forth to Boston may end up being more expensive. Just make sure you understand where the office will be. They are moving one of the offices outside Boston. Good luck!

Where are they moving the offices? I get the sense that there's barely any tech in Boston. Most of it seems to be in New Hampshire, Texas, and North Carolina. To be honest, I think the TC is quite low, especially considering that entry-level SWE comp is the same in New Hampshire as it is in Boston. May I ask what your TC was and what G6 maps to? Did you start as entry-level? edit: just saw youre non-swe. I get the sense that swe at fidelity is very low on the totem pole, very undervalued. would you agree?

Most tech teams in fidelity are distributed between New Hampshire, North Carolina, and Texas. Boston mainly has finance, operations, product teams etc. Fidelity pays nearly the same for all New England offices. As far as I know, they are renovating the world trade center office and moving to an office in suburban Boston, possibly South of Boston. Other Boston offices will still be in use. I'm not too sure how to map G6. G6 is usually Senior Manager and above at Fidelity. I m currently P4 moving to P5. I did not start at Fidelity, came in with 10 YOE. My TC was $175k in Boston. I wouldn't characterize that tech is not valued at fidelity. In fact, I always remember the company taking great pride in innovation and technology advances that they're always striving to make. If you are going to compare UBS and fidelity to the likes of FANG, it may seem like tech is undervalued, especially based on comp. Rest assured, it's not. That said, I still think your offer is below market value. I'd counter based on the UBS offer. Whatever you choose, I'm sure there's a lot to learn and you'll be just fine. Good luck! Hope this helps.
