And in the meantime, try to find UX work to volunteer ownership of at your current company. Network with your company designers, look them up on LinkedIn, get exposure and advice from them. It’s easier to transition at a company than into an entirely new field somewhere new with no real experience.
Understand what part of design you want to do, first and foremost. Some like UX and talking with customers. Some focus solely on the research aspects. Others work on service design and systems design across experiences. Others really just like to do visual work (and you have to be really good here to be competitive).
A lot of people conflate UX/UI together, and there’s really so much more to it.
