I just moved to a new apartment and I am trying to decide which gym I should join.

I don’t care about the membership fee, and may actually prefer the more expensive gym in order to fully utilize my gym stipend.

I also don’t care about classes or having a sauna or pool or anything in the gym, and the quality of the showers in the gym don’t matter that much to me either after getting used to the showers in Blink.

What I care about is plentiful access to free weight equipment like bench presses, dumbbells, barbells, and it would be nice to also have plentiful access to machines.

The planet fitness is a 0.2 mile walk from my new apartment (4 minutes) and the crunch fitness is a 0.4 mile walk (10 minutes) from my new apartment.

Which one should I sign up for?

A 6 min walk difference is nothing. At this point I’d choose based on facility and price.

a 6 minute walk each way. so 12 extra minutes a day. assuming gym 5x a week, that's 50 hours wasted each year for what exactly?

not to mention weather in NYC can make that extra 6 minutes extremely uncomfortable in certain parts of the year. makes no sense to unnecessarily double your travel time

  • planet fitness sucks. If you want to put on muscle you will find PF has lacking equipment. Not even a bench press.

Crunch is a “full equipment” gym. If you need racks, plates and kettle bells, hit Crunch. PF is more of a “light” gym, but has exactly enough for what a lot of people need.

  • PF doesn’t have squat racks and barbells. If that is okay with you, PF should be good enough!
