Hello, I am looking for a new home in San Ramon I like that the houses are good and crime rate is low with excellent schools but I am concerned about the transport to work since my office is in Sunnyvale (not planning on commuting anytime soon still feels quite far) Plus SFO airport is away.
Looking for info about the neighborhood though - proximity to convenience stores, recreatinal activities, extra curricular for kids, community

Flexible WFH policies - can go to work once in 2 weeks, if I want to.

I grew up in Danville/San Ramon and my parents still live there. I can't speak more highly of the school district and how wonderful of an area was to grow up in, but the commute is a dreadful one, especially to the South Bay. You'll need to ask yourself some tough questions about trade offs. Does your work offer flexible working hours so you can leave early if you were to go into the office? Are shuttles available? Are you okay with sitting in your car for an hour and a half to two hours? The SFO airport being far away is a pretty meh point unless you travel quite often for work, and in that case just book early morning flights.

The last thing to note about the Danville/San Ramon area is the lack of diversity. It's changed a lot since my family moved there 25+ years ago. We were the first not white family to move on our street and my siblings and I were bullied a lot growing up for being different. It has improved a lot since then, but it's worth noting to be mindful of the current divisive political climate we're in as it's quite amplified in this part of the Bay Area. That's not to say you won't be able to find a community of folks who you align with, it's just something to be mindful of.

    • I just googled right now without any traffic it’s 35mins from San Ramon to San Mateo, so with traffic that’s 50mins.

On weekends to half moon bay that’s like a 3hr round trip; similarly for SF city.

So what’s within 20min driving radius, Walnut Creek, Hayward…

I’m not a troll, trying to decide between this vs Sacromento, Napa… etc. Our family doesn’t like to drive, so I’m going for proximity to stuff here.

San Ramon is great. Echoing what Roblox said earlier as it’s not the most diverse, but it’s definitely in the “excellent@ bucket for home location.

However, if you need to commute to ANYWHERE that is not ~Walnut Creek or ~Livermore, it’s really going to be difficult for you. Driving in the traffic sucks. There are a LOT of commuters every day there.

If you have to go 5 days a week to Sunnyvale, then no. If you have to go 2 days a week, then it’s fine. It is an excellent place to live

  • Think it's a good option if you plan to go only 2 days. Was in a similar position and decided to go with San Ramon.

    • So far I like it. There are plenty of trails and outdoor spaces so if you are into that, you should be fine. The area is also very beautiful and has wide open spaces and doesn't feel as cramped as some parts of south bay. I haven't had a chance to explore the local restaurant scene but I believe you could drive to Pleasanton or Walnut Creek for more dining options.
