UX design grad school or online bootcamp?

Mar 6, 2019 6 Comments

Looking into switching into UX Design. Recently got into Berkeley MIMS program and is trying to decide if I should leave current job and go back to school full-time vs. staying and complete a UX bootcamp like General Assembly online.

Do UX hiring managers look at degrees when hiring entry-level UX designers? Whatโ€™s the typical starting salary?

    Portfolio matters over everything else.

Bootcamps tend to teach a generic formula and I havenโ€™t seen a bootcamp portfolio Iโ€™ve been impressed with.

If you go the bootcamp route youโ€™re most likely limiting yourself to a UX design role at a small startup (low pay). The caveat would be if you have excellent design craft skills and need a little mentorship for how to apply those skills in the UX world.

Masters can be 50/50 and it depends on the program.

But again experience and skills trumps everything.
