That’s a fair point, but for me personally, I have no interest in management or being an executive. The IC8s I know of at FB are all Asian women, so at least on the IC side there is representation for me.

I’m not denying that there’s lack of diverse representation in executive leadership, but I’m trying to be selective about the issues I do get outraged and upset about. I’m not saying it’s not important, I just don’t know how to fix the issue or how my outrage helps.

When you tell someone who says that something doesn’t bother them but that it should bother them, you’re making it about you. I’m sure the OP’er is intelligent enough to understand the vast amount of problems the human race faces with diversity.

Devils advocate - Many white men deserve to be in the roles they are in by working hard and making sacrifices. What would you say to them? Would you tell them “oh, you’re a white male, so you don’t belong in leadership because there are too many of you”?

In the end it's subteams. I just saw a connection quit Google for FB because the design org at Google was so bad.

I feel pride really. At least what I'm seeing Facebook feels more like ....you know the smart but annoying kids in class who are right but still piss people off? That's Facebook. Any of the issues are from growing too big too fast and they're working on them better than other companies.

@Asana, definitely! I think that’s probably the route I need to go, but I interestingly keep getting rejected from them at the application stage, including Asana haha

  • I don’t get it. Have had completely opposite experience. I think she’s just super jr and hasn’t really figured out how to be effective in these massive FAANg companies

Same, I agree. I’ve worked at large tech companies my entire career, you have to learn how to communicate and bring people along in your design vision. She mentioned she came from small startups, so I can imagine that the ways of working can be a shock to her.

Is it ok that after working there over a year I'd disagree with almost everything she said?.....maybe her team was really bad, but I've had nearly the opposite experience on every front

Of course - that’s why I posted this to hear what other FB designers think. Would you mind sharing more of your experience and your background?

Oh I saw your other post - sounds that you came from IBM - that makes a lot sense.

Are you working on B2B product at FB? The team dynamics and the requirement for craft can be very different from product to product.

"At a big and mature place like Facebook, the product has already been established [by the thousands of people before you]... and unless you're coming in as a Design Lead for an emerging product or an innovation team, it's very unlikely you'll be working on high impact projects that require a lot of ownership from the designer."

This is my primary concern with joining a company like Facebook and other mature organizations - unless you're Senior/Principal and/or on an innovation/strategy team, you're likely only making incremental small changes to the product.

But I don't see this is a Facebook specific issue, I think that's true for a lot of non-start up environments.
