Looking at Uber EM roles and was contacted for a role that I feel like I’d be a good fit for. Still curious about the culture there and everything else. Every recruiter I’ve talked to in the past there seems to be incredibly busy there. I’m hopeful that the delayed responses are not indicative of their culture. As for Zillow, I am curious what the Culture is like there too and what P5 ranges are there? Haven’t seen any offers or posts regarding them. Current TC: 240k Uber EM (5a) expected comp? Anyone know Zillow P5 (Principal) comps?
Culture in Zillow : changing rapidly and becoming more like Amazon (both the good and the bad) ...
Thanks - What’s the comp like? Lots of people stay beyond 4 year initial grant it seems.
Not sure if they will stay anymore. Comp is above Microsoft and Amazon and below LinkedIn uber snap Google fb etc ...
AFAIK Uber does not hire external 5a managers
I’m confused by your statement. Take no offense but how is this relevant to Engineering Managers? If EM II is 5b then wouldn’t EM I be 5a? Or are you saying EM I are L4 too?
EMI is L5A, EMII is L5B.
L5a managers are internally promoted first time managers. External hires are expected to have prior experience so they’ll either be 5b+ or won’t be hired for the most part.
Great, thank you for the clarification. Many of the postings in Uber’s site are Engineering Manager positions, and any EM2 is posted as such also which is what caused my confusion. Thanks
Is this still true? Recently passed onsite but they said EM 5a and EM 5b is for manager of managers. I am confused because I have 6 years of EM experience. EM 5a feels like junior EM and I feel like I got downleveled. Is that correct? Or was there some adjustment to leveling at Uber recently?

Worried that our top performer is an attrition risk. How do managers handle this?
Please update the thread once you have numbers.
I was kind of hoping to get some numbers from Uber employees. Hence the tags. As far as I can see on levels.fyi and comp.fyi EM (5a) and SWE (5a) have the same structure. As for Zillow... hoping more @zillow folks answer because it sure seems like they’re happy there.
