Uber offer received. How to say No to other offer

Oct 26, 2018 50 Comments

I'm going to join Splunk as SDE in two days. I already sign the offer a few weeks back and also resigned at my current place. I'm currently with VMware.

I interviewed for Uber as SDE few weeks back. My recruiter didn't contact me until today. Now she said they are going to extend an offer. I don't have numbers yet. I will update the post once I get it. I'm sure about joining Uber. I'm currently on visa. Uber offer will take at least 2-3 weeks to finalize. Negotiation, visa file, background check etc. I don't want to join on receipt so technically I won't be able to join until February '19

What do you suggest in this case?

Offered TC: $245K.

@spartan321 Go for Splunk. After spending last 2-3 years at IBM, there is no doubt in my mind.

Chance are rare, but still you're right. It's possible. Who knows Uber h1-b may get rejected

Would they ok for you to join on receipt? Ask them if they have a contingency plan if things don’t work out for you.

If you don’t want to risk all the headache stuff then just join Splunk and leave when Uber’s paperwork is done. By then you’ll have 4-5 months of experiences and salary so not bad

I have yet to talk to their lawyers, but from what I have heard, they suggest not to join on receipt. That means, I can't join them until next 4-5 months.

Then join Splunk and leave after 6 months. Just don’t spend your sign-on bonus.

Has ur h1 got approved for splunk ? if no, why not join uber with receipt itself? Hypothetically, even if ur h1 gets rejected when u r in uber, wouldn’t uber handle it. Wats not worth checking with a attorney for a small fee ?

Dude if the H1B gets rejected while working at Uber then the only way is highway -> sent back home

I already have H-1b approved with Splunk. My first is coming Monday. Also, as @Tucks said joining on receipt is quite risky. I also have wife to take care. If rejected, we both have to leave.

Yes please join Splunk it’s a great company. If you still feel after 6 months that Uber is good and your visa is approved then go 4 it

I empathize the insecurity, but if ur h1 is approved for splunk, why wud it have to get rejected for uber. I have no intention to sound cocky, just trying to suggest being rationale. U must be a talented person cracking and getting offers from unicorns. I wud say dnt let the insecurities of current afrairs dictate and supresss ur talent. Evaluate all other aspects as well, comp, team, tech, impact, manager, Cohesiveness, commute, wlb, ladder etc.,

A job is nothing more than a business relationship. They know that. Join Splunk, give them your best 6 months, and if your transfer is accepted on 6 months, quit politely.
