Uber safe to join?

Is Uber safe to join now in Engineering? The 2020 profitability goal seems enticing and I'm wondering if jumping ship is worth it. How is the morale and scene at Uber right now? Layoffs?

I wouldn’t advice joining a company that’s not profitable over google. In a bear market Uber will definitely lay you off while the chances of google doing that are low

No - didn’t you find any other job ?

No, I wouldn't join any of the failed unicorn IPO's e.g. Uber, Lyft, Snap, Pinterest, Slack etc. Their stock is volatile af and they'd be the first one to take a hit when recession comes, don't forget Uber had 2 layoffs in the last 6 months. Go with much safer options like Apple/Facebook/Salesforce/Amazon etc.

Pinterest imo has a much more stable outlook.

Looks like you don’t know the history of apple

I just renenged a signed Uber offer for Google. I did it because of team fit primarily. Uber in the long term will be successful but it will never be the next Google/Fb/Amazon/Apple. Not because they dont have good tech but because everything they do transportation, delivery is very low margin and depends a lot on regulations. They will be a good company but not the next Google.

It's ok not to become next Google, as long as you get the paycheck and grow in engineering skills.

But RSU will never grow was much as Google.

You’ll get a great price on your RSUs

Has Uber's "safe to join" changed in past two days? https://www.teamblind.com/post/Is-Uber-safe-to-join-now?-eRR3icbS

Changes every day. When stock was at lowest - it was like hey this is the best time, when stock was high , hey look it’s high everyone is excited about future - join. When was it a bad time at Uber ? The PR machinery has been saying every day in the past 6 years as a great day to join - infact now with focus on profitability it won’t be easy ride - lots of layoffs and not much growth.

Uber’s in a great spot. They’ll do fine on profit and growth over the next few years. As an engineer, Uber has far more high impact work available than a more mature eng org like G or FB. If you just want the $$s, go get underpriced RSUs. If you want impact for promotions, Uber has that too.
