Uber got off easy
Ehh you imply Uber did something.. But considering Waymo settled for a quarter of their original $1B target (in equity lol), no injunction on ATG, and a promise, I feel Waymo never had a case to begin with. All of Waymo’s patents and a hundred of the “trade secrets” that the case started with got thrown out along the way. I’m not sure the settlement sum is even enough to justify the legal fees. In other words, this was all much ado about nothing.
Way less than 1/4. They originally wanted $1.9b
I am disappointed, Google should receive nothing if you follow the first few days of the trial. Their case is pretty weak even the usual anti-Uber journalists like Sarah Jeong are questioning its legality.
Looks like a great win for Uber. Now full sail ahead ATG!
Yeah this is a huge win
How does this set tone for Uber in the future? How does this set tone for ANY startup that rises up to challenge Goliath?
I'd say it's a win. But it's a win at a cost few can afford.
Good to see Uber wasn't hit too hard as far as I can tell. Competition is good for everyone, I want cheap taxis
$245 million of a customer-hostile company. Good move GOOG.
They aren't customer hostile though
Oh, sorry. To that add: “Unprofitable, anti-competitive, regulatory nightmare without significant technological advantages and a proven toxic brogrammer culture.” GOOG could’ve put them out of business. This CL bullshit was a death knell. Instead we get the first steps to an acquisition by waymo/alphabet. Maybe shrewd business. GOOG certainly didn’t need the money. So they get influence.
