I’m a civil design engineer in a tech city. Pay is pretty reasonable, with OT paid out as straight pay. I’ve never worked over 40hrs though and at most expect to work 80hrs of OT cumulatively for the entire year.

Ah okay. I do work a lot of overtime. Around 50 hours a week. I'm always out of town though. So I do get per diem over my TC for most of the year which helps but I don't think it's worth the travel and not having a settled life.

If your degree is in civil engineering it may be worth a jump to consulting. The TC isn’t as high as construction but the WLB is far superior and travel is absolutely minimal.

As far as construction opportunities in tech I’ve seen some CM roles open up for tech companies but asking for obscene amounts of experience. I did interview for an airport traffic congestion management role at UBER but they wanted more experience than I had (probably since I’m not a PE yet).

I’ve made the decision to prep for jumping into a pure tech role.

Never heard of any tech company having construction roles. They usually subcontract those.

They do have construction managers who just represent them and oversee construction activities which are subcontracted. They also have program managers for construction projects.
