Received an offer from Microsoft, currently working as SDE 1 in Amazon for 1.5year but have a total of 2.5 yrs experience worked for 1year at DXC.

Microsoft offer :
Location - Redmond
Org- azure
Level- 61
Base: 137k
Signon- 35k for 2 years
Stocks- 120k for 4 years

Current TC at Amazon : 163K but for 3rd,4th year 190k due to stock price increase.

I have no competing offers, not interviewing actively. Any room for negotiation? Also, any thoughts on bonus I see they can go up to 20%. It really happens ?

It is terrible for Microsoft WLB standard. It will be much better than Amazon. Even if you work for same hours, you will work with less stress, feel it respects employee, enjoy better benefits, move to another team without worrying about PIP and also hope for promotion (levels are granular). If you compare to Office and Windows, you will feel you are working twice as much but promotion is quicker and the skills you learn will be more valuable.

Thanks @yekebd - I exactly wanted to hear this 😛. I am not expecting Wlb and culture to be great I just hope it’s not as bad as Amazon.

  • Good numbers if no competing offers... Know a guy with a competing offer who got 61 offer, same base as yours, 30k signon and 80k stocks

  • Don’t assume that WLB is good especially in Azure. 20% is max and basically impossible to get, because the fixed budget is a forcing function even if Microsoft doesn’t have a forced curve like Amazon does.

Yeah heard that azure is bad. But is it that bad though ? Current team at Amazon 10-11hrs a day is normal and still expecting more. Does avg is 10% or still less than that ?

    • The budget is around 105%-110% of target - it depends on how well the company is doing. “Peanut butter” rewards (not a lot of differentiation) are a real phenomenon at Microsoft, which, for some, can give an impression that it kind of encourages mediocrity but it can also encourage better collaboration because there’s less at stake.
