I’ve 3 YoE in the company and also overall. My manager and another colleague (both 16+ YoE) team up and take away projects with limelight. They don’t let me participate in those projects and keep me in the dark. My manager wants to be a “manager” just for the title and hasn’t had a meaningful career discussion with me till date. I end up talking to internal peer teams and search for issues to find work to keep myself busy. There are a lot of opportunities to learn and grow, but I’m not given many. What should I do?

  • Shitty manager. I have had one like this before, who was actually clueless about what being a good engineering manager involved, they were too focused on the tech. Are you able to change managers?

I don’t think so. Also, don’t want to burn the bridge with him/her and other colleagues. Clean exit is the only option. Leetcode, it is then :)

No. I had scheduled a recurring twice-a-month 1:1 time, but there was no coaching/guidance from my manager’s side, more like a daily stand-up. Later he/she started scheduling other meetings during that slot! At this point, I’ve given up :( What should a 1:1 include, typically?

Even during early 1-2 years when I scheduled 1:1s and prepared a plan for development/learning, projects I’m interested in etc., those projects would anyway be taken away by others.
