Understanding bayarea political views

Jan 7, 2019 36 Comments

Most of the people at G, FB, AAPL are left leaning and hate on Trump. I’ve met a few that are for Bernie and like Ocasio. A lot of them want a change because of inequality and lack of opportunity for the poor etc. all makes sense to me

But when you look at the companies like Google/Fb/apple, all of these companies exploit tax loopholes and the effective tax rate is less than 5%. Hundreds of billions that could have gone for development of the society is going to feed these bayarea employees or stuffing them with perks. Other than the tax havens, companies like Goog/fb deduct the full cost of the free food as the cost of doing business. Small businesses like restaurants, when feeding their own employees are only allowed 50% deduction. There is a massive lobbying effort at Google to keep the 100% food deduction as an expense.

When the same slimy shit is done by Trump to make money then it becomes nefarious. We want to see Trump’s tax returns but what about possible trillions stolen over the years by tech companies. The Googler who sits next to me is a loud liberal but does not show the rent he collects. I have seen this time and again at a personal level and turning a blind eye to the corp you work for

I am not supporter of Trump but I am trying to understand the thinking here. It is fine if a corporation steals tax and slows down society’s development? I don’t see any Googlers marching to make Google pay the full tax it owes the society.

Hell even the big capitalist evil Goldman Sachs is going to pay taxes at 24% for 2018.

If you are response is going to be Trumptard etc.. or useless swearing or the liberal moral high ground .. GTFO

Also the wall is morally wrong but exploiting tax loopholes is not?

I am trying to understand if not paying your fair share of taxes using tax loopholes.. is in line with ideals of liberals? Or aggressive corporate lobbying to save free food?

Personally i like all the perks at Google which come through tax evasion but i am not the one taking the moral high ground.

Lot of modern liberals are about signaling more than substance. Classical liberalism used to be free markets, independence and less government. What we have now is a bunch of virtue signaling, guilt tripping manipulators. They make you feel bad about anything and everything. On a fundamental level their base line of thinking is severely programmed by MSM and they don’t put any cognitive effort into realizing if the thoughts they have in their head were placed by some John Oliver or they have some conviction about their ideas.

That's because Bay Area liberals are some of the most self-serving mofos you'll ever have the displeasure of dealing with.

They love taxes but complain when their state tax deductions are taken away.

They talk a good game about the housing crisis but don't want high density housing to bring in mino- I mean changing their neighborhood "character".

They're against Trump's anti-illegal stance and think that low skill workers should compete with illgal aliens but will lose their shit if their overinflated TCs are threatened by H1b contractors.

tl;dr their political view is "fuck you I got mine"

    1. When strategies to lower a company’s taxes are available, we can’t fault the companies for taking advantage of those loopholes. But we can argue for fairer laws

    2. Donald trump on the other hand has used illegal methods to avoid taxes

Your comment doesn't invalidate the reality that we're just sitting here arguing "what about..."

I don't watch John Oliver thanks. I also don't resort to attacking others with character insults when I don't have anything useful to say.

SV people liked the Trump tax cut.

They have hated everything else he has done including the ballooning the defense budget, $1 trillion deficit per year, making diplomatic negotiations harder, ignoring clinate chnage and propping up coal industry, his obvious nature that he is hiding something (never released tax returns and a lot of quid pro quo with Russia) and his stance on immigration (illegal immigrants help support the labor market and the farming industry doing jobs that otherwise will be untouched by US citizens).

If Dems come in power the want an increase in taxes and mostly all the SV ppl will follow suit.

The reason they support Cortez or Bernie is because Cortez is asking to tax the super rich (5+ million in annual income) so we dont have to raise taxes for the middle class.

      That isn't a bad thing.
Many in SV realize that 400k to 500k annual income is more than enough to live well. Above 500k it becomes excessive. 5 mil income people should be taxes 50%, end of story.

The big falsehood in this argument is that company profits ability to avoid taxes is not directly related to wages and “perks”.

Walmart does the same shit but like with tech, it’s just extra to pocket, not a windfall to give back to employees.

The second big falsehood is the idea that employees somehow have influence over how their company pays taxes. If the OP wants to help form a tech worker’s union, then I ‘m all for it. Then maybe we can influence a range of policies in our companies.

So your argument is that the smartest ppl on the planet are turning a blind eye to tax evasion because there is no proper channel to voice their demands?

Something indirect.. it is in your face tax evasion pull up the income statement and see the tax $ paid against profit accumulated. Infact EllisDee25, the liberals /Google employees are participating in the initiatives to dodge tax on free food at Google. Explain the compliance there.

Now you would say maybe this only happens at Google. You ask a liberal are you ready to pay higher taxes and they start throwing a fit on how they are barely making ends meet in $300K in the bayarea

yes, my argument is that well paid wage earners (“smartest people” is highly debatable) are still wage earners and thus have no control or ability to really influence or make demands on the tax policy or lobbying efforts of their company. They can make suggestions or put public pressure on a company, but unless they are organized and prepared to go on strike they can’t really make direct demands with any real power behind it.

Anyway, why should average liberals (or conservatives) pay higher taxes? I thought we were talking about companies paying their taxes.

Corporations are required by law to do as much as they can to increase profit. They can be sued for not doing the utmost to produce more profit, this incentive warps corporate behavior and causes companies to seek out ways to maximize tax avoidance. If we want companies to stop that behavior then either the foundational principle of maximizing profits has to change or the loopholes have to be filled in. Corporations need some sort of AMT, so they pay their fair share of the tax burden.
