Understanding more about the PIP at Amazon

Oct 30, 2021 11 Comments

Can someone talk more about the PIP? How is it affecting you for applying to other jobs? I mean assume you are not on the visa so you might have lots of time to explore other companies. Is it like something other companies can detect or find out through background checks or something like that?
I understand if you are on a visa, then this is a nightmare. Also how common is PIP in RS and AS roles? I have heard bad stories about SWE and SDE. Any feedback would be appreciated.

You don’t need to do anything to be pipped. One day you will be the TT with the same performance and you will be pipped the next time because someone younger and energetic spends more time and works faster than you. Simple!

It’s always you vs the rest. Not you vs your goals.

    • Thank you for your feedback. This looks very crazy. Every how often they do these types of evaluation.\? Based on what you say, I am a little confused as I think candidates in AS and RS might be stronger so individuals might get piped much faster or easier.

I've seen amazon piped many of my colleagues that created critical component of our cloud infrastructure and replaced them with college hires that can barely transform a pojo into json.

Theory and reality are two different things.

Stacked ranking is suppose to cut the fat.

At amazon they way the implement stacked ranking is that they cut the muscle and replace it with fat.

Amazon is getting obese, that is why the stock is tanking.

I will be fine, hiring these days is LC centric and I am fairly competent in algorithm based technical interviews. I LC my way into Amazon, and I believe that I can LC my way into any company.

Only mistake in my career was accepting Amazon offer, they use pip fear to force engineers do shitty ops works which is a waste of engineering talents. Instead of engineering their way out of all these ops work they rather waste their engineer's time and WLB fighting fires. I am seeing the best years of my career wasted here by these shitty engineering culture.

And I can't leave because they backloaded their vesting schedule and if I left before 4 yrs I am leaving too much money on the table.

    • I really appreciate your informative feedback.

  • The backloading schedule alone is huge no no for me. They're literally incentivized to make you leave soon.

PIP is why they call Amazon a jungle. Survival of the fittest, but even the strong get unlucky sometimes and a poacher gets them (bad manager) or a wildfire sweeps through the jungle (re-org).
