I'm living in east coast TC $125 YOE: 10 Moderate cost of living city. Married. no kids. Spouse not working (no need of day care for future kids ) 15 min drive to office. double bed room home with rent $1800 (luxury apartment) Moderately go out for restaurants I'm having very comfortable life here and monthly, ended up saving some good amount also. I have never been to bay area and trying to understand the real cost of living comparison. If I move to bay area, then I'm fine to commute 30 to 45 mns and can compromise the quality of the apt as well. The realistic home rent will be around 4.5k to 5k for 2 bed room apt. Utilities, restaurants and shopping in bay area costs around $1000 more than my current city. So total take home should be 4k more than current salary. Which is $230k TC. And anything above $230k in bay area will be more savings than my current salary Is this realistic calculation ? Just fyi, I don't have plans to buy home Also I'm looking for salary comparison of my current situation only (not like day care, owning home etc .. ) Did I miss anything? Any inputs are helpful. #google #facebook #uber #amazon #netflix #apple #twitter #lyft #snap #microsoft
5k rent is generous. Unless you're living in SF.
Taxation to consideration?
If you don’t count the stock and you participate 401k and Espp, your take home money will be less than 4000 per month. How can you afford a 4-5k monthly rent ?
230k is not good here. With wife and kid at home
Ya I have seen many posts mentioning that 250k to 300k is like middle class in bay area. Actually that’s the main agenda of this post. What am I missing here for my current scenario? If I feel very comfortable with $125k tc in my city. Why can’t I maintain the same life style with $230k tc in bay area
Dont come here. No matter how much u earn here u will never be able live american lifestyle in future. Tax is killer.
230k is not a good number. Will be really struggling if you have a family
Yeah I total agree tax sucks. Expensive rents etc ..... Just trying to understand what did I miss in my original post ?
You would want to stay in a better location due to school consideration in future whose rent would be toward the higher side. Plus cost of living is higher in bay area regular stuff as well. Check the following to get more insight. https://www.nerdwallet.com/cost-of-living-calculator
With your YoE, why would you work for 230k? That's 2-3 YoE TC. Don't compare with Oracle TC. Oracle pay is shit tier.
I’ve loved living in the Bay Area. Great career opportunities, high TC, great climate, lots going on. At $200K+ the Bay Area is fine as a single person...
