I'm having trouble picking between 2 offers I currently have. Which one has a better learning environment? Which one would better position me in the future? All these positions are in Chicago. Current TC: 102k United Airlines Snr Manager Offer: 150k salary + 15% cash bonus +7% stock bonus Capital One developer offer: 110k salary +10% annual bonus + 15k sign on bonus + tuition reimbursement up to 5k a year Capital one also has good tuition reimbursement, I'm currently doing a masters degree in data science. Capital One seems to have smarter engineers and a better overall environment. Capital one also offers up to 3 months paternity, we are planning to have a couple kids soon. United Airlines is a little bit more stable and I would be controlling a department. I would not be coding as much but I can work to build a department. This is a totally new challenge I would either do now or in the future. United also has semi decent flight benefits.
Your not lying about the flight benefits, for stability and great job security United airlines the way to go since their union
United Airlines corporate it not union.
Ehhh need to confirm that?
I work there, good company- fight benefits hard to use but nice to have- no tuition reimbursement.
You’ll rarely use the flight benefits with a kid likely, but I see no upside in Capital One with the TC deficit. The tuition reimbursement is peanuts. Used to work at UA, really liked it but had a hard time advancing because company wasn’t doing that well early 2010’s, barely any open jobs. Didn’t quite mean to hate on the flight benefits above, because when I was without kids I did use them and visited a ton of places. You can even fly on partner airlines like Lufthansa to get other places beyond their network. Honestly if it wasn’t for Chicago cost of living I’d love to work at UA now that I’ve achieve management experience elsewhere.
I don't really have anything valuable to add here, but I will say the airline industry has a spirit of competition across airlines that makes it easy to feel deep pride for what you do. Good luck!
First coworker I have seen in a while haha. We are pretty proud at Alaska!
Haha yeah, I was wondering how many of us there were. What's your title? I'm a SWE Ecom
I love the airline industry! (Just make sure you liquidate the stock pretty quickly - you know how Warren Buffet feels. 😉)
Some advice about flights benefits...if you want to see the world, they’re still great. You need to be opened minded about where you want to go. If you need to be somewhere for family vacation or wedding, I recommend buying tickets. But if you want to fly somewhere every weekend, it’s possible. You just have to be a little open minded on the destinations...
I would go with the senior role at United. what is paternity leave like there? with a family on the way the higher income will be beneficial also if you end up hating it you have that senior manager experience under your belt.
I would suggest for United Airlines role in comparison to Capitol One as it is Snr Manager which is like upper end of middle management. It is a growing and would open up opportunities for upper management levels and pay is much better. Its true that with family it would be very difficult to use flight benefits but still there are few time you can use it nicely of you are open mind and flexible schedule.
What level of developer would this be at capitol one? I’m a dev with 5 YOE looking to move to Chicago in the next few months, and capitol one was on my list of companies to look at.
I would vote for senior manager, and also the flight benefits are the shit!
