Hey,

I have worked in 4-5 companies. Every time I found my onboarding strategy pretty inefficient. I usually DFS through all docs/codes/etc, and by end of the second month I become very overwhelmed and intimidated. I, however, have seen colleagues who seem to spend less time and onboard faster, more efficiently, and more confidently. I am sure managers like that style more.

I need some advice/insight on how to best onboard?

Any article, video, mooc, etc?

    Bfs don’t dfs.

Dfs will just get you into rabbit holes.

Bfs and start coding and picking up a bug ticket

Nothing beats just getting hands on experience

going through all docs seems like a terrible idea, what i did was first get a high level overview of our service from onboarding buddy, get familiar with internal tools, slowly start checking what apis there are and whats their flow, instead of goinf to the nitty gritty, maybe just read the javadoc comments etc to get what a fn does and thats it, slowly you will start to understand what most of the code does when you fix bugs and stuff

Personally? Get a task work on it and build out my knowledge base from there. Ideally the company/team should provide you a good entry point task.

I find it’s important to start with some sort of narrow focus. Often times a bug or something is useful but it’s just hey make this happen here are some core pointers. Ask questions and search from there.

That’s what has worked best for me. Generally I’m more of a get my hands dirty type of learner.

Yeah. Just ask for a simple bug to fix and get into it right away.

The easiest way to learn build systems, etc. is to just do it.

Make sure it’s not a high priority issue. Best to learn fixing something that’s non critical.
