Upleveling while moving from Microsoft to Google/FB

Jan 18, 2018 15 Comments

Read some interesting info on another thread and wanted to validate it.

Have any L63-64 in Microsoft moved to L6 or higher in Google or FB? I was under the impression that L63 = L4, L64 = L5. Am I wrong? Asking because I am interviewing with both and wanted to know if I can ask the recruiter to be interviewed at a higher level.

Consider yourself lucky if you manage to get the same level.

    L63 to L4/E4 is common.
L64/L65 to L5/E5 is more common.

Even if you kill the interview, the HC or Exec review will likely downlevel you to L5/E5.

I have heard L65 to E6 at FB is a bit more common than L65 to L6 at Google.

I am L64 that got both E5 and L5 offers and joining Facebook.

Lastly, Focus on pay than levels. If you can get more money at lower levels, that’s the best place to be in. I wouldn’t mind taking E4 with E5 pay, outperform peers and get quickly promoted to E5 and have an early win under my belt.

    Everything is L4, 5 if you're lucky

If you know someone who got 6 at anything below 66 they are either lying or extreme right tail

You cannot ask to be interviewed at any level. Committee will decide and likely downlevel

  • This is slightly off-topic but I'm curious, how long does it typically take a new grad to get to levels 63 and 65?

    • There's a wide range, but I'd say typical to Senior is 6-8 years (1/1.5/1.5/2) with no real typical to principal, but 10+ being common. It really depends, though; some great performers with good opportunities get to principal in 6 or 7 years and some people get stuck in SDE2 for a decade.
