Currently M1 (L6) at Google, I've received verbal offers from these 3 places for Sr Manager (I also have other offers with companies I'm not interested in joining so skipping those). They've not yet discussed compensation, but I expect that will start soon.. so trying to get some help here.
(Update: confluent title is director, not Sr Manager)

How should I think of comp when comparing late stage pre-ipo (confluent and databricks) with Facebook? Should I expect similar comp or higher comp from pre-ipo?

Reading through some old threads on blind, it seems 850-900k comp at Facebook is do-able. Can anyone help me understand the breakdown on what this looks like on base+bonus vs rsu?

If Facebook offers 850k (suppose), what kind of TC should I target with databricks and confluent? I'm far more interested in these 2 companies than going to yet another large company. I think they'll add diverse experience on my resume which I may not get at larger companies now.

Current role details: L6 at Google, 16 YoE total (5y as manager), TC 900k (240 base, 20% bonus, rest equity due to GOOG stock doing well. Falling to 600k next year due to cliff. Hopefully GOOG stays at or above current $2,500+ levels). My current scope of responsibility is easily M2, but for the goddamn Google promo process.

P.S. Please keep the discussion on-topic here, related to comp. I will create a separate post later about my interview experience and prep if there is interest, or questions about Google. DM me your off topic questions and I'll compile it into a separate thread later, I promise.

Confluent is a s..t place to work with egoistic devs. They do not even know how to treat people in interviews

  • How strong do you see yourself? Are you the sort that often gets high ratings? If so, then FB pay will scale very well at M2+ level with lot of additional equity. If not then it's a tougher call if the other two are offering comparable pay.

    • 700k rsu and 700k refresher is not the same thing. With 450 refresher and average ratings you'd be around ~800k rsus/year after third refresher and no stock appreciation. Base on new offers don't usually vary - I don't know the number but honestly I wouldn't worry about the base much.

    • You can get 270+ base and 2M+ initial equity relatively easily, I know from personal experience. You can go Even higher if you have competing offers or already pretty compelling TC at google even if it’s due to stock appreciation.

FB recruiters are your friends once you have thumbs up from hiring committee especially as an M2. They’ll try to convince the comp committee to go as high as possible. Don’t be afraid to quote a high number that you’re looking for in order to accept.

  • DB likely has the highest potential upside, FB has highest guaranteed comp and Confluent will be volatile with IPO, but could be the best bang for buck if you secure enough equity in writing ASAP. Believing in DB or CFLT at least for the medium/short term would be critical to realizing any possible upside. What kind of risk portfolio do you have and personal development goals are you looking to achieve?

Thanks. I agree with this in general. I am definitely excited about confluent and databricks. I do believe they have a formidable product and leading in their category with lots of room to grow.

Financially I'm doing well, so I have slightly better risk appetite at this point where I'm looking to join later stage start-up. I fully understand that these companies stock may be volatile (company performance and stock price don't always correlate since stock market is driven more by perception and sentiment), and I may end up making less or more than my initial grant prices. I'm comfortable with that risk. I do think that working at smaller (in comparison to FAANG where most of my career is spent so far) companies will allow me to learn things that I haven't been exposed too.

Ideally if the comp is close enough, I'd be inclined to go with cflt or db over fb. If fb ends up giving significantly more (say 20% or higher), that's when the decision making may be more difficult.

  • How long did it take for you to hear back from Databricks and confluent after your on-site round?

Previous coworkers. It's quite common in smaller companies that don't contract out background checks to 3rd party companies

It’s getting references from people know you. Very common and Google does it too. DB moves fast. I got verbal confirmation that there will be offer, just a few hours after my interview. Also DB uses 3rd party to do background check after you sign the offer.

I feel DB’s level is more strict and they claim it’s 1:1 mapping with Google. I’m L6 IC and DB only offer L6 although I did almost perfectly in interview and HM asked for L7.

HC said they never level up Google candidates before, which seems true as I checked many L6 and L7 IC from Google, they all get the same level. For manager, I saw a few Googler got L+1. But I assume it’s hard from L6 to L8.

    • If you care about Comp most of all, Databricks will surely give you what you’re asking for, but sounds like the wrong reason to join.
