Folks who are stressed out and depressed but cannot quit a job because you don't have one lined up, read on. Finding a job is harder if you don't already have one. Finding a job is also harder if you are stressed out and depressed at a place like Amazon. So don't quit your job. Here is a good option for you - ask for FMLA leave. they have to give it to you. You need to email your manager and HR when asking for FMLA. Just say "I am asking for FMLA leave for personal health reasons starting tomorrow". No need to specify any particular health condition. Your manager may press you or threaten you. But don't fall for it. He has no power once you use the word FMLA. Then find a psychiatrist who can fill out the forms requested by your company. Not hard to convince a psychiatrist that you are depressed and stressed out. Even if you can't find a psychiatrist you will still get a few weeks of time during the back and forth. You will keep your health insurance while on FMLA. Your company cannot fire you while on FMLA. Now while on FMLA, decompress and search for a new job. You will get 12 weeks time to be on FMLA. You will keep your health benefits too. You don't have to tell prospective employers that you are on FMLA. Your company is legally required to not disclose that info during an employment verification. Talk to an employment lawyer for any questions. Please don't abuse FMLA. DM me if you have any questions
I got out of a shitty situation once using FMLA. Without FMlA my career could have taken a big step back. TC: 300k. YOE - 22. On track to retire in 5 years or less.
What was your retirement “number”?
Hope to be at 5 mil in 5 years. Wife has low stress government job to get us health insurance. College funds for kids set aside separately.
Isn’t it better to get the note from the psychiatrist first and get the FMLA approved by the leave team before you tell your manager? It seems they would be the safer option
That works too. If you need time to find a psychiatrist then you can ask for FMLA leave first.
It need not be a paid leave , correct ? You cannot be fired for taking FMLA, but it’s not mandatory that they continue to pay you. Were you paid your full salary when you took the leave ?
Right. It is not paid leave. You get time to decompress and look for another job while technically still"employed". Though if you have a serious enough condition you can apply for disability insurance payments.
I know in the past, that a well known company did pay full salary to an employee on FMLA on medical grounds , but yes could vary by company. A big company may not want to get into legal issues for small things like this
Talk with a lawyer before following this advice.
Due diligence needs to be done of course, but the approach is correct when needed
FMLA is state specific ..may not work in every state outside golden California..
FMLA is a federal Act. Not state specific. Stop spreading misinformation!
Do you have to have worked for your employer for certain minimum time before taking FMLA?
You should have been working with your employer for a year.

Any good psychiatrist in WA state who helps with recommending FMLA for anxiety/depression? If anyone has experience working with a psychiatrist and successful with filing FMLA, please comment. Thanks
Hello, please let me know as well. Thanks
I'd say go to your provider's portal and hit up 2-3 psych/psychiatrist/PM as it's hard to get their dates and also the first one may not be willing. Take it from there. Try not to bring up FMLA in first meeting and schedule second meeting within a week if possible. That makes it easy for the doc to develop trust and take a decision on FMLA.

What’s your TC? Maybe that’s what has you depressed. OP explains how to abuse FMLA, then says “Please don’t abuse FMLA”
How is it abuse if a person is depressed? That is a legitimate health reason.
Agree, this scenario is exactly what FMLA is for. A happy employee would not voluntarily go without getting paid for 12 weeks just to do a job search.
