Got an offer from a GCP team at Google. Heard bad things about this. Is it really that bad?

should have put a simple "bad" instead or "run, forrest, run". people will just select this option because it sounds fun and you will have skewed data

Gcp is big enough to be an entire company on its own. Culture definitey varies team to team, if for eg you work on Infra Spanner i bet you would have a great experience on the other hand team working on frontend for gcp console not so much.

GCP hired a load of ex AWS / Amazon, ex OCI / Oracle SDM, NDM, TPM and leadership and ex AWS / OCI ex WITCH engineers.

Google talent don’t want to transfer to GCP but GCP folks would love to move to Google.

    Make your next move carefully.

Read the posts again..... I think that they clearly indicate that if you have choice of non-GCP orgs then you should take it and they say why to avoid GCP. To reprise previous posts; GCP is Ops heavy and full of political ex Amazon/AWS and Oracle/OCI nanomanagers. Think of working at Amazon/AWS without the market lead of being first mover in the space but with less buggy legacy product to maintain and changing technical direction every few months.

GCP just laid off its whole USA support operation to move the service offshore to India..... its leadership is ex Oracle so get used to that.

Really, when you say that you have a choice to choose non-GCP orgs...... its not even a choice - go for the non-GCP orgs already.

However, as bad as that seems - I know first hand that Amazon / AWS is worse... so that should at least sweeten the pill.

Bello674: thanks! my hesitation about non-GCP org is they seem to move slow. I really like the fast pace at Facebook and would like to lean towards that (dialed down a bit would be nice) rather than towards 20hrs/week.

My thinking is: I don't have any visa issue so if the working environment is bad I'd just leave anyway. Might as well try developing new products in GCP.

  • One of my friend joined it last month. He was ranting a lot on clueless management and lack of process. Sounded pretty bad for G WLB standard

can you say more on the lack of process? how does that look like?

at Facebook there's not much process and that's pretty good actually. Just do whatever that moves your project forward.
