current/ex PMs at VMWare, how do you like it there? does product have a say or is it purely engineering driven? how is the company for career growth as a PM?
Some PMs have had good career. Like Sr PM to VP within the 10 years. It’s going to depend on which growth product to ride on.
PM in Vmware r combination of program manager and functional architect. Most of the SaaS product PMs r just demo dollies . I am yet to come across a PM in Vmware with good business acumen.
can you specify what you mean by ‘combination of prog manager and func arch’? both those roles mean many things at different companies
I would agree on not having good business acumen. Mostly technical similar to MSft Program Managers. Also, way too many PMs for each product not having complete picture - impacts user experience. They cover functional areas and not complete solutions. Majority head of groups (SVP/Gm) grew up through engineering ranks and will manage PMs. Also, PMs are mostly former engineers.
Well half of the release managers in company were CVS pharmacy receptionist, they don't understand technology. So PM get involved in moving back log , planning grooming with Engineering etc... Architect well most of the CTO office staff is busy doing some fancy project to find another job, so PM acts as architect for most products for deployment, integration , components, workflows or any other shit
Haven’t been here long enough. Im sure other than the CTO part, rest is BU specific.
It depends a lot on the BU and Product you’d be working on. I’ve seen both.
^ Speaking of eng driven vs PM driven
