Given that somebody don't mind the bad wlb and they are hyper motivated to work hard and climb the career ladder no matter what, tell me why that person should choose Google Cloud or Azure over AWS? AWS is miles ahead when it comes to cloud services and it is unlikely that either google or microsoft will be ever able to catch up to AWS. Furthermore, Amazon has all the resources and money in the world to continue to grow and innovate. If the future is cloud×2, Amazon is going to do amazing and therefore their stocks will go to the moon. Besides, Amazon is not just into cloud, they are in practically everything. Heck they have been doing a lot of crypto lately.

Edit: To summarize the question, as an SDE if tomorrow i get an offer from GCP with 40% salary hike why would I consider the short term gain, given the long term opportunity I may have with AWS?

AWS is carrying the company. Unfortunately the retail part is a drag on earnings. The stock reflects Amazon, not just AWS.

I'm L5 at Google, and my last refresher was $140k. I get around that every year, regardless of stock growth.

    • Ye it’s a part of it. I am curious if it’s low margin, why do they keep pouring money into this sector? Do they see upside in retail eventually?

No, retail will always be low single digit margins vs 25% or more for AWS.

For retail,, it's all about the revenue. Historically, revenue drove the stock price for Amazon. That's coming to an end now, with overall revenue growing under 10%.

Some companies are direct competitors with Amazon in certain categories (e.g. Wayfair with furniture). Some of those companies don’t want to house their data with Amazon. For those companies, choosing Azure or GCP gives them cloud scalability without supporting their competitors’ bottom lines.

Though, as someone who has only worked with non-direct competitors, I agree that AWS trumps all other cloud platforms.

Amazon makes sure you don't get lucky with stocks, and usually there's no refresh.
And there's nothing amazing about building a new region or rolling out security patches.

  • You have 1 yoe. I don't mean to crush your hopes and dreams, but you'll learn soon. This long term potential you speak of doesn't exist that way. I'm willing to bet that someone that leaves for gcp or azure and boomerangs will have a way faster career trajectory than someone who just stays put. In terms of levels AND TC.

Heck you don't even have to boomerang or stay in the cloud business.
