Are people buying more (expensive) cars in pandemic? Who are buying these cars, where are they going in these cars? How’s Tesla beating expectations? Those who understand, please help others understand this magic!

WFH, people moving to suburbs. Need cars.

Scared of getting infected in public transit. Need cars.

“My next car is a Tesla”.

OfferUp - be mindful of the fact that not everyone has a EV charger at their homes. Pre pandemic most people charged at their work which was also a hassle due to low supply (of chargers) and high demand and I noticed people hovering for ev charging spots and becoming really aggressive on not being able to get one. IMO filling gas is lot easier than charging your car unless you have a charging station at home which you seem to have and assumed everyone else to have as well.

That is true, and an assumption on my part.

Infrastructure issues are only going to get easier as time goes on, though.

There probably weren't very many gas stations back when the first popular gas vehicles came around either.

  • Says Apple. Why are people buying 1000 dollar iPhones when a $150 Motorola is sufficient. Charge the Tesla in my $2M SFH. With all the crazy Tech stock appreciation, lots of people have multiplied their NW multi fold and have enough money to splurge on expensive stuff. Look at Bay Area real estate and you will understand. SFH are being over bid by 100-150K

  • Wealth is at an all time high. People are buying up luxuries at historic rates. That said tesla doesn't really make money, they have creative accounting and minimize warranty reserves and maximize tax credits. The former is probably illegal but hey its 2020 who cares about the law anymore.

Every new grad at a FAANG or FAANG-equivalent can easily afford a Tesla model 3, and what better way to flex your new job while wfh than with a nice luxury car?
