Corrective jaw surgery?

Feb 6 24 Comments

Hi, wondering if anyone here has gotten bimax/orthognathic surgery? How was the recovery process and how many weeks did you take off from work?

I have a slight underbite and I’m wondering if it’s worth it or not.

Yes I’ve those and those are least of your worries, another thing to consider you’ll be wire shut for a week and be on liquid diet for at least 6 weeks and up to two months chewing problem

I also read that removing plates is easy but you’ll still have to go under the knife and in General anestesia that I didn’t want and decided to keep them as it doesn’t bother me and they don’t show in metal detectors or In security check gate at airports etc if that’s your worry

Had both jaws done. Still a little swollen but already very happy that I did it.

I had complications from anesthesia and needed a full two months off.

Do you like the aesthetic change? And sorry to hear about the complication. Thats my worry too — that something will inevitably go wrong

I had obstructive sleep apnea corrected by the surgery so that alone was worth it. I can breathe and sleep better now. Definitely happy with the changes to my facial profile though.

Man being ugly is hard enough, and then some doctor wants to cut apart your face and put it back together differently. Like that’s gonna help. Pass

  • I had exactly this and did jaw surgery. Like 12 years ago. Every time I look at myself in the mirror I am thankful I did that surgery (and I wasn't awful before). It's just a nice-to-have improvement that you'll probably be happy you did. It was a pretty miserable 1-month recovery for me. Good luck and hope it all goes well!

Thank you! Glad to hear that it was a success for you. Can I ask if you have any permanent numbness or complications from the surgery? Another thing I am worried about is having the plates and screws in my face for life lol. Did you get yours removed eventually?

    • Everything is still there in my face. They used some bone or cartilage from my left hip (where I have a permanent scar from the surgery) to help with the new jaw placement. I experienced no numbness or other loss of sensation in my face and jaw.
