Title.

Been at Google for about a year now, mostly working on unchallenging work (bugfixes, site reliability). Don't have a ton to show for it, manager also has acknowledged that the work I'm doing isn't challenging and won't be helpful going toward a promo packet.

Found an interesting team internally that seems to have mutual interest. But regardless of what happens, my real long-term goal is to re-interview for FB E5/Netflix within a year, once my grace period wraps up.

Should I still internally transfer, so I can say I got _SOMETHING_ done at Google, or just chill and do interview prep the entire next year? Assume I can't do both since the team I'd potentially internally transfer to is in a department with much worse WLB.

I would just focus on interviews, having Google on your resume is going to get you the interviews regardless of what you shipped

It might be hard to get L5 offers if all you do is bugfix and maintenance day in and day out. Getting some L5 level work will help.

I think some might care, others might not. Are you L4 or L5? Either way, if you think you can get more impactful work and bigger scope with the new team, I think you should go for it

I'm L4 targeting L5 because I've passed L5 bars in my most recent round of interviews, it's just that the offers themselves weren't great, so I'm continuing to focus on L5 and prepping for that level. I don't know for sure whether switching to a new team will necessarily increase scope—it could just be a case of, grass-looking-greener, plus with Google being the way it is the first six months with my new team would just be onboarding. Neither option right now is great, which I guess is reflected in the near-50/50 vote.
