Verbal offer, asked for desired salary before official offer

Hey Blind,

Just recieved a notification that I will recieve an offer from an interesting early start up. About 10 employees from what I understand. The manager sent me an email saying they want to proceed with a formal offer but want my desired salary range first.

Just looking for input on how to proceed to max out total comp. Not sure if there is equity/bonus on the table, maybe I should ask? Really uncharted territory for me espicially since it’s a start up.

The salary range was given in the job description as 80-130k. Now, I don’t have that many YOE and limited experience with the technologies being used but feel confident I can ramp up quickly. How should I proceed?

YOE:2
Current TC:65k

  • Ask for range, then ask for MAX. Also, it’s a startup, there must be EQUITY - that’s the only reason to join a startup

    • I agree about equity. Just talked to the hiring manager about what I can expect and heard back this. No bonus or equity, just base salary for compensation (I work and live in the midwest so thats not abnormal but I agree for a startup you’d want equity) although they might offer equity in the future. No 401k until potentially the summer. Unlimited PTO and 7 days holiday and an HSA option for health insurance. Salary range for the position is 80-130k. Thoughts? Thinking of defining my range as 95-115k because I think I would enjoy the position but no 401k kinda sucks imo and I think the company still has a lot of room to grow but I want to be compensated to make up for anything lacking despite me only having 2 YOE

    • Never count on money they promise in the future. ‘401k, equity is coming in the future’ it will never come unless written in contract

Never tell current salary and if they want a range ask how the pay is broken down - base/bonus/equity, early stage equity is not very valuable imo tho unless you really believe in the product
