I started my job at a fintech startup 5 months ago as a Staff Software Engineer. My manager told me that they'd generally not do full review until someone is in for more than 6 months but would do it for me because I'd be in the borderline of that timing.
The performance review came in. There were 15 criteria we were evaluated at and I got meets expectation in 2-3, exceeds expectation in 7-9 and redefines expectations in 4-5. I thought that was great review but I didn't get any comp changes nor promotion. He mentioned that I was 3/4 way to being promoted to Principal.
I'm curious what people think is fair on these two points
1. Doesn't full performance review mean that I'd be expected to get a raise if my reviews are good?
2. Doesn't the review I mentioned above deserve a comp change or a promotion?

TC: ~300K in a Series A startup.

Are you upset that you didn’t get a promotion after working for 5 months?

No, I'm not upset about not getting a promotion after 5 months. I think there was misalignment of expectations when I was told I'd be eligible for performance review. I expected the review to have some change in either comp or title or both. I had never been in a performance review without a comp change. So trying to validate my expectations were not wild.

I’m a general sense comp review and adjustment happens after performance review but they’re not mutually codependent in your case.

It’s not exceptional whatsoever you literally just started

I don’t know of any company that would give a raise after less than 6 months.

5 months is short. With that said, Series A is smalll enough where they shouldn’t have arbitrary rules around comp increase timeline

Would chat with your manager about what you need to get to principal, timeline, and comp expectations

It’s pretty standard to “do a review” for an employee even if they aren’t eligible for comp adjustment (ie been working at the company for too short a time or otherwise ineligible during this round)
