Nite: This is my first swe job

The Scrum Master assigns tasks every week, I complete them early most of the time, but then senior swe has to verify it. Sr swe says all good but then assigns me random work like refactoring old codebase. I completed what was assigned to me, why do I have to work outside my scope? I had to work 12 hours yesterday because of this.

Does this happen often?

  • This is great- it means the team trusts you and is a necessary part of growing as a software engineer. This is a team sport and the more trust you build, not to mention the amazing experience and pain of refactoring old code, the more you’ll get pulled into design, architecture, infrastructure planning.

Since you have 0 YOE this is all amazing experience imo. See how you feel a year down the line.

Good positive perspective! I forgot to mention: once I’m done with the task, Scrum Master will assign new task. Now I have refactoring and a new task. If I work on the new task, sr swe says to work on refactoring.

    • Ah didn’t realize this was happening. You’ll need to ask the scrum master to help prioritize the most impactful work. That way they’ll realize you’re only human and can do a limited number of things while always focusing on what’s most important to the product/team/business.

This is the way. Work isn’t like school, there’s no need to think about it after hours. New grads take some time to get used to this new reality

Learn to set boundaries and give time estimates. When you get bonus work, don’t commit to finishing it in the sprint but to make progress on it

You finished early because you are working extra hours! Work 8 hours per day and you will be fine

If you spend the extra hours on the out of scope then just stop working once the 8 hours are over. It’s not part of the sprint and you didn’t make any commitments to finish it

  • Stop finishing your work too early. You brought this upon yourself. Wtf would you work 12hr to finish a task? They'll just give you more tasks and you'll continue to work 12 or more hours.

Scrum assigned task, I completed it early (my fault)
Sr swe assigned work and said get this done before getting new tasks from Scrum.
I let Scrum know that I’ve been assigned out of scope task by sr swe
Scrum didn’t care, and assigned me more tasks.

Point of the story is, like you said, I did this to myself by finishing work early.
