Do you think the .NET platform has much of a following among tech companies? I am sure it has a lot of use in Microsoft (obviously) and among non-tech businesses. But I don't perceive a lot of use of C# and friends in tech-focused companies. Whereas there is still lots of Java around in addition to Python, Ruby, JS and newer, more hip languages.
MSFT is rectifying a lot of past wrongs. I am encouraged by the open source . Net core https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/dotnet/core/about
Good to know about the open source move. This platform has always aroused suspicion in the past due to Microsoft's ownership. Sun/Oracle's ownership of Java was counterbalanced by the fact that it was cross platform.
.NET has significant momentum behind it now, but you have to look outside the Silicon Valley bubble.
Dot Net (and Microsoft stack) is really popular with Finance corps (banks, insurance and the like).
