I am Indian and have some Pakistani and Middle Eastern friends on Facebook (people I know from grad school and previous jobs). Sometimes they post stuff on their walls that let's say typically would not sit well with the current administration and their ideologies. I don't comment on or like those posts and just ignore them. In order to not get into trouble ('guilt by association' - read Tech Crunch article in below link) the next time I try to enter the country and the immigration officer at the airport goes through my phone, which of the following would you suggest someone in my position do? Context: https://techcrunch.com/2019/09/02/denied-entry-united-states-whatsapp/?yptr=yahoo
You can unfollow people without unfriending them
But that could still get me in trouble if the officer goes to one of said friends' profile and sees things he doesn't like and decides I am guilty by association.
Would have to go to profile and through your friend list alphabetically. If it matters that much either uninstall the app or have multiple profiles
Almost happened to me. Don't even have social media. And no friends from said countries. Just cuz I visited Egypt. Don't even have one of them names they screen for.
lol
Burner phone won't help. CBP can ask for your social media account info and in theory could log in to your account from their own device. They might even be suspicious if they thought you carried a burner phone or your claimed not to have a FB account.
This happened to me. I had my regular phone. But I legitimately don't have fb. And they won't believe it.
They asked to check your phone?
I suppose you could go though your FB feed and hide all the posts you are worried about, but I don't know if there is a way for them to unhide the posts or just look at what posts your friends made regardless of whether they are in your feed. You may have no choice but to unfriend folks you are concerned about. Sorry for you.
Would making fun of trump count as "anti american"? I don't hate anything or join anti america groups but I quite often comments on those funny news articles about how trump is stupid - like today when he said he doesn't know what a category 5 hurricane is, or when I read regressive policies about lgbtq or women. Would that land me in trouble?
Don’t associate with terrorists? That shouldn’t be too hard...
Oh, the wilfully ignorant just proudly demonstrates his ignorance. Just another day on blind.
I’m confused. Are you saying it is difficult to not associate with terrorists? I’m sure the FBI won’t care if you’re friends with some random dude from Pakistan—unless he’s a terrorist or terrorist sympathizer.
Don’t go the burner route or “not having any social media” Of all the 1000’s of people that travel through a CBP officer, 90%+ probably have social media. You are an outlier to NOT have accounts. Being an outlier raises suspicion. Appear normal, appear indifferent, have the accounts. Decrease your social media presence by pruning your friends list, especially if you haven’t talked to them in some time.

Factory reset your phone just before touchdown ?
lol unless you want to install all the apps again in the secondary room i do not suggest this approach. it doesn’t take a genius to realize your phone was factory reset.
