During war, we tell soldiers to sacrifice their lives for the hundreds of millions. We utilize authoritarianism and social pressure/patriotism to instill bravery in 20 year olds to shoot strangers (picturing D Day boats approaching Normandy). We do this to maintain our freedom and our system of government that makes our nation and people wealthy / high standard of living and quality if life.

Why are we not willing to utilize the same logic in pushing through COVID-19, releasing the shelter in place in a couple weeks once hospitals are better organized, and accept that a few million of us aren’t going to make it for the betterment of the 330 million? The stakes are still the same about whether we can maintain our livelihoods and system of government.

The math works out that in WWII the US lost about 24 million life years (400K 20 year olds dying). The breakeven to that would be around 3 million people with 5-10 years of their life left dying from COVID-19, accounting for the median age of death and their preexisting conditions.
